After a visit on Thursday to Cupru Min SA Abrud, the company that exploits the Rosia Poieni deposit where 60% of Romania's copper reserves lie, Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca said that investment should be supported so that the copper ore can be processed in the country.
"Today, together with Alba County local officials, I visited Cupru Min. I wanted to start the working visit with this company because, from my assessment at the government level, it turned out that we need to pay due attention to the exploitation of mineral resources, which we are indeed doing now, by the way (...) We wanted to see on the spot, together with the other members of the government, what we have to do so that those resources can be processed in the country and we can benefit from greater added value," said Ciuca.
He added that this state-owned company managed, through efficient management, to turn a profit and retool itself as it was able to allocate a part of the profit for it, Agerpres.ro informs.
"It is also worth noting that, as far as I could see, in the copper mine there is a possibility that it can be exploited more efficiently. There is also a time predictability of several decades, so there are resources, there is ore that can be exploited. It would be absolutely unforgivable if we were not able to support investment so that copper ore could be processed in the country. Specialists have already presented the solutions and the advantages," said Ciuca.
He added that there is a project at the European level for the development of such industry and use the final raw material for the development of conductors, semiconductors and microchips, and as such, he said, this resource will have to be processed in the country.
Asked if a location was established where the factory that would process the Rosia Poieni copper concentrate would be established, Ciuca said that the Alba county officials want such a plant to be built in Zlatna, where "there is still knowledge in the respective field."
Prior to this statement, Ciuca announced on Thursday in a Facebook post that the government is preparing a memorandum under which half of the profit of the CUPRU MIN company will no longer go to the national budget, but it will be geared towards new renovations, noting that approximately 43 million lei will support the company's production without affecting the environment.
