A bust of the national poet Mihai Eminescu was placed in the square in front of the National University of Uzhhorod, in Ukraine, the Romanian Consulate in Solotvino informs on Thursday.
"The erection of Mihai Eminescu's bust in a university space in the heart of Transcarpathia is not only a cultural act, but a historical moment. This is a recognition of the deep roots of Romanian culture in this region and a sign of the continuity of an identity that has endured despite the times. The fact that this gesture takes place in front of a higher education institution adds a special dimension: Eminescu's message thus reaches the younger generations, Romanian and Ukrainian alike. This initiative contributes to the strengthening of Romanian-Ukrainian cultural relations and reaffirms the importance of dialogue, respect and cooperation between communities - essential values, all the more necessary in these difficult times for the region," said consul Gratian Florin Parvu, according to the press release of the Romanian Consulate in Solotvino.
According to the same source, the bust was erected to celebrate the National Culture Day, and the event was attended by the prefect of Maramures County, Florian Salajan, the president of the Maramures County Council, Gabriel Zetea, representatives of the Transcarpathia Regional State Administration and the Transcarpathia Regional Council, the rector of the National University of Uzhhorod, as well as members of the Romanian community, teachers and students of the Department of Romanian Language.
According to the press service of the Maramures County Council, more than 400,000 ethnic Romanians live in Ukraine, and almost 35,000 ethnic Ukrainians live on the territory of Maramures County.
Since 1990, the Maramures County Council and the "Petre Dulfu" County Library in Baia Mare have constantly supported the Romanian community in Ukraine with books and textbooks. Annual summer school camps for children, trips to the county and participation in various cultural and musical events were organised. With the outbreak of the war in Ukraine, the Maramures County administration, together with NGOs, representatives of religious groups and other institutions, became involved in supporting war refugees, especially women and children who crossed the border into Romania through the Sighet border crossing.
