Poultry slaughter in industrial units (slaughterhouses) showed an upward trend in 2023, compared to the previous year, and the slaughtering of cattle, pigs, sheep and goats had a downward trend.

The production of milk collected from agricultural holdings and collection centers by processing industrial units increased in 2023 compared to 2022, according to a press release from the National Institute of Statistics (INS).

According to the INS, in 2023, the number of heads of cattle slaughtered in industrial units (slaughterhouses) decreased by 12.8% compared to the previous year, and the slaughter of pigs decreased by 1.1%. The production of beef decreased by 11.6%, and that of pigs by 1.3%.

The number of sheep and goats slaughtered in industrial units (slaughterhouses) decreased compared to the previous year by 2.8%, and the production of sheep and goat meat by 2.4%.

Poultry slaughter in industrial units (slaughterhouses) increased by 5%, and the production of poultry meat by 4%.

Cattle slaughter was predominant in the North-East (51.1%), West (over 9.7%), Southern-Muntenia (9.6%) and Center (9.5%) regions, and those in the West regions (37.3%), South-Muntenia (23.7%), North-West (12.8%) and North-East (12.7%).

The most important shares of sheep and goat slaughter were registered by the West (23.9%), South-Muntenia (23.3%), Center (17.0%), South-East (13.2%, ) and North-East (11.6%).

Last year, poultry slaughter was predominant in the North-East (28.9%), South-East (21.7%), Center (17.3%) and South-West Oltenia regions (over 13.0%) and Sud-Muntenia (10.2%).

Regarding the amount of raw cow's milk collected by processing units from agricultural holdings and collection centers, it increased in 2023 by 81,841 tons (+7.2%) compared to the previous year.

The collected amount of raw goat milk decreased by 10.8% in 2023 compared to 2022, while the collected amounts of raw buffalo and sheep milk increased by 9.6% and 37%, respectively.

The quantity of imported raw milk decreased by 42,068 tons (-26.6%).

In 2023, the biggest increase in production was recorded for butter with 524 tons (+5%), followed by cream with 1,019 tons (+1.6%).

Decreases in production in 2023 compared to 2022 were recorded for the following dairy products: processed cheese by 2,659 tons (-24.6%), milk powder by 319 tons (-12.9%), sour milk (yogurt, yogurt drinks and other similar dairy products) with 9,661 tons (-4.5%), drinking milk with 10,152 tons (-2.8%) and cheese (including curd) with 361 tons (-0.4%).

The production of cheese obtained from cow's milk (which represents 92.1% of the total cheese production) also decreased by 1,297 tons (-1.4%).
