President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday that there are two general problems which are "attacking" adolescents in Romania - the issue of drugs and alienation or the lack of belonging to a community.
He was asked how it feels to live in a country where three adolescents planned and murdered a friend, also an adolescent.
"It is absolutely regrettable, however if we put it into context we see that Romania is not unique. It is a phenomenon that happens and, if we put it into an even broader context, we see that there are two general problems which affect young people of this age. One is the matter of drugs and the second is alienation or the lack of belonging to a community and also the lack of natural contact between generations, parents - children. For each of these problems the state must have as appropriate a response as possible. Up to now some timid steps have been taken, but on the issue of drug use we cannot say that we have a strategy that we are implementing and that we have objectives which we are achieving one by one. We are not in that situation," the head of state said on Digi 24 private television station.
He added, referring to the murder case in Cenei, Timis county, in which three adolescents killed another adolescent, that it is an isolated case for that age group and not a phenomenon.
"There is a debate on what the age of criminal responsibility should be. I will leave it to the specialists to weigh in," Nicusor Dan said.
