President Nicusor Dan in Iasi on Saturday said all Romanians have a duty, out of respect for the initiators of the 1859 Union, to make an effort to look at society as a whole and to engage in dialogue with one another.

Speaking at events dedicated to the Day of the Union of the Romanian Principalities, he said that Romania must have 'a society that succeeds in identifying its interests and negotiating them with external partners,' pointing out that in the geopolitical competition in which our country is also involved, 'those societies that manage to bring their energies together will succeed.'

'Each of us must make an effort so that, beyond doing our job and being responsible citizens, we manage to engage in dialogue, to look at our society as a whole and, together, to contribute to making it better and more prosperous. This is, out of respect for those who achieved the Union many years ago, what we must do: build a society that manages to communicate, build a society that succeeds in identifying its interests and negotiating them with partners and with the countries with which we are, of course, in contact, to see its interest and, above all, for all of us together to constitute a society. This is the Union, the goal of union in 2026, because we are entering a difficult competition, a difficult geopolitical competition and in this competition those societies that manage to bring their energies together will succeed. I am optimistic about Romania. I am optimistic that we all have the maturity to build that society in which our children will want to stay here,' the head of state said.

The President also spoke about the need for long-term projects for the healthcare system, for justice and for the economy.

'I return again to the quote from Mihail Kogalniceanu, ‘The Union is the energetic act of the entire Romanian nation', and I want to ask you all whether we are managing at this moment to constitute a society. Because Romania has exceptional doctors but, if we are honest, we will see that we do not have a project for Romanian medicine, we do not have a projection of what medicine in Romania should look like in ten years, of what the medical system should look like in ten years. Likewise, we have an exceptional private economy. Yes, we have a private economy that has doubled GDP in ten years, but have we managed internally to bring all these energies together so that we have an economic project for the next ten years? We have not yet managed it. We have exceptional magistrates, but do we have a project on how to correct and balance justice in Romania? We do not have one at this moment,' Nicusor Dan added.
