The international environment is shaped by chronic and sudden crises, the revival of spheres of influence and growing competition among major powers, President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday, adding that he has asked Romanian diplomats to adapt to these realities.
"The international environment is marked by chronic or sudden crises, by the revival of the logic of spheres of influence and competition among major powers. And, as has been mentioned, international norms have often become relativised and multilateral bodies have, at least in part, lost their strength. The global stage is marked by multiple, overlapping crises and calls for dynamism and flexibility. In my capacity as President, I have asked our diplomats to have the ability to adapt to these realities, to anticipate future developments and to respond promptly to them," President Nicusor Dan said at the annual meeting with heads of diplomatic missions accredited to Romania, at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace.
He added that, nevertheless, within this new framework for diplomatic action, Romania will maintain its fundamental reference points.
"Our country will remain loyal to its foreign and security policy promises and commitments and, at the same time, will pursue its national interests with determination, as our citizens expect us to do. This is the essence of the concept of 'solidary independence' that I introduced in the new Defence Strategy. We are convinced that only a strong and autonomous Romania can add value to the alliances, partnerships and cooperative relationships in which it is engaged. A strong Romania is a better ally, partner and interlocutor for the countries you represent," the president told the diplomats accredited to Romania.
Nicusor Dan also stressed that, "on a global stage that is often chaotic", Romania will continue to be a reliable partner.
"We will pursue the same foreign policy based on the triad of the European Union, NATO and the strategic partnership with the United States. We will pay increased attention to issues of immediate importance to us: the war of aggression waged by the Russian Federation against Ukraine, the European path of the Republic of Moldova, cooperation with our strategic partners and with states that share the same values. To our traditional friends in the Balkans, the Middle East, North Africa, Latin America and Asia, we will propose, over the medium term, a new level of ambition that capitalises on the historical capital of our relationships and the new political and economic dynamism of these regions," the president said.
