President Nicusor Dan said on Thursday in Brussels that Romania's interests at the European Council are aimed at the Republic of Moldova, the Black Sea region and Ukraine.

"This is the first European Council. There are many topics. First of all, this Council comes after the NATO summit, and thus there will be some topics related to defence, including the increase in spending, but also how Europe can produce military equipment. This is going to be a big discussion. There's a strong foreign policy and security component.

Romania's interests revolve around the Republic of Moldova and at Romania's initiative in the final declaration there will be a paragraph on the Republic of Moldova. As you know, there will be a first EU-Republic of Moldova summit on July 4. Moreover, at Romania's initiative, there will be a section on the Black Sea.

Two weeks ago there was a communication from the High Representative, and our request is to have it transposed into an action programme for the Black Sea and we hope that the final declaration will reflect this issue and of course Ukraine is important for Romania and the first item on the agenda is Ukraine, with the participation of President Zelenskyy via video link," said President Dan, before attending the European Council meeting.

He indicated that the European Council discussions will also cover other European internal policy issues - competitiveness and foreign policy - as well as the Middle East.
