Romania was in a vulnerable position and the governing coalition has succeeded at the macro level, President Nicusor Dan told a press conference on Thursday in Brussels.

"This coalition has succeeded if we look at it from a macro perspective. If you had asked me five or six months ago, our main concern was whether rating agencies would downgrade Romania to 'not recommended for investors' and many investment funds would leave the country. This risk no longer exists. This is a success of the coalition. The fact that, on the OECD [the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development] front and on the legislative side things have reached a conclusion, we have met all our obligations, is also a success of the coalition," the head of state said at the end of his participation in the European Council meeting.

He also mentioned that six months is too short a period in order to assess the coalition.

"Romania was in a vulnerable position and the fact that these four parties chose to be part of the government is a good thing. (...) We should encourage them, as we have no alternative," the president added.

Nicusor Dan admitted that he wishes for the Romanian society to recognise both its opportunities and vulnerabilities.

"We are not just talking about the coalition, but also about myself and, generally, any public authority: the relationship with the citizens must be improved, we need to expose more, rather than throwing accusations at each other - I am referring to the political class. It is more important to explain what we are doing, what the stakes are, why the Western direction is good, why Europe, despite its decision-making and structural challenges, is the viable alternative for Romania," he added.
