President Nicusor Dan said on Friday that the governing coalition is somewhat weaker than it was six or seven months ago, but voiced confidence that the current governing arrangement will continue in a responsible manner.
"I believe the mandate given by Romanians was to preserve a pro-Western, pro-European and pro-transatlantic course for Romania, and that each party embracing this direction bears responsibility towards the voters who supported it. How negotiations among them will unfold at the level of individuals is not something I can anticipate," he said at a press conference following the informal European Council meeting in Brussels, agerpres reports.
The head of state stressed that there is concern regarding the country's stability.
"What I can say at this moment is that I observe in each of these parties the desire and the sense of responsibility to continue governing. Indeed, compared with seven or eight months ago, when I was speaking with representatives of the financial sector, companies and investment funds that have lent money to Romania, their fear at the time was mainly financial and fiscal - that Romania might enter a spiral of interest rates from which it could not escape. At present, they no longer have this fear; fiscally, Romania has stabilised. Instead, there is concern - and I am asked this question - about political stability. So the coalition is in a somewhat worse position than it was six or seven months ago, but I am optimistic that it will continue responsibly," the president said.
