AGERPRES special correspondent Oana Ghita reports: President Nicusor Dan declared on Tuesday evening that one cannot speak of "an official intention of the U.S. administration" as far as Greenland is concerned.
"Regarding Greenland, we are not talking about an official intention of the American administration," President Dan declared at a press conference in Paris after taking part in the meeting of the Coalition of the Willing heads of state and government at the Elysee Palace.
President Dan emphasized that Greenland is an autonomous territory under the Danish Crown.
U.S. President Donald Trump recently reiterated his desire for Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark, to come under U.S. control, even after Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen urged the United States to "stop the threats" to annex the territory.
"We need Greenland from a national security perspective, and Denmark is not going to be able to take care of it. We will deal with Greenland in about two months. Let's talk about Greenland in 20 days," President Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on Sunday evening, according to AFP.
On Tuesday, the governments of Spain, France, Germany, Italy, the United Kingdom, Poland and Denmark defended Greenland's sovereignty against U.S. claims in a joint statement in which they affirmed that Arctic security is "a priority" for Europe and is critical for international and transatlantic security, Reuters and EFE report.
"Greenland belongs to its people. It is for Denmark and Greenland, and them only, to decide on matters concerning their relations. These are universal principles, and we will not stop defending them," the statement, as cited by Reuters said.
