President Nicusor Dan is participating today in a meeting of the Friends of Competitiveness group of European states for coordination on the internal market and competitiveness, in order to prepare the European Council meeting of March 19-20, according to Agerpres.

The meeting is scheduled for the evening in a videoconference format.

On Monday, Dan had a call conversation with the President of the European Council, Antonio Costa, during which Romania's priorities and major themes were addressed in preparation for the meeting of European leaders on March 19-20 in Brussels.

He told Costa that Romania wants "a fully integrated single market, as well as a significant simplification of bureaucracy and administrative burden". Another topic in the telephone conversation was the future European budgetary framework.

"Although the debates will take longer, Romania's perspective must be correctly understood. The EU budget must provide relevant funds for increasing competitiveness including in the Eastern states, of which Romania is a part, nations that have a historical gap with respect to the level of development of the other member states. In fact, I welcome the European decisions being geared towards boosting competitiveness and investments that ensure an energy system resilient to external shocks," Dan wrote in a social media poste.

The leaders of the EU member states are expected to have discussions next week at the European Council meeting on the next multiannual financial framework, competitiveness and the single market, and European defence and security amid the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East.
