President Klaus Iohannis said on Thursday that the suspension bridge over the Danube linking the counties of Braila and Tulcea is the largest construction built in Romania in the last three decades, showing that it is a new proof that major infrastructure projects can be completed in Romania.

"This is the largest construction in Romania in the last three decades and it is the third largest bridge in Europe. I congratulate all those involved in this investment project for their efforts and the result achieved. We have a new proof, as strong as possible, of the fact that even in Romania, if there is will and seriousness, major infrastructure projects can be completed. Special thanks must also go to the Japanese and Italian partners for their involvement and professionalism. Two years ago, on the occasion of the centenary of bilateral relations between Japan and Romania, this bridge project was presented as a conclusive example of cooperation between Japan and the European Union. This construction is certainly one of the most ambitious transport infrastructure modernisation initiatives in Romania, carried out with European funds, international expertise and state-of-the-art technology. (...) The bridge that is entering into service today is a very important first step in achieving the objectives of connectivity, transit traffic flow and road safety. This project is also a measure of good cooperation, both national and international," Iohannis said at the inauguration of the suspension bridge over the Danube.

President Iohannis pointed out that Romania has access to a significant amount of European funds, and a significant share of these sums is allocated to the development of transport infrastructure.

The head of state said that attracting competitive investments, adapted to the specific local development, creating more and better paid jobs are just some of the advantages that Tulcea and Braila counties will enjoy in the coming period, through the completion of the bridge. He congratulated the local authorities for correctly understanding the stakes of better connecting the region to the national road transport network and encouraged them to keep the right direction for attracting investment and successful new projects that connect communities and support businesses.

He pointed out that transport infrastructure must remain the top priority of any government, but also of local authorities, because "this is the only way we can benefit from larger, more efficient investments and we can reduce the large regional gaps existing today in Romania."

The event also saw the participation of Senate President Nicolae Ciuca, Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu, Transport Minister Sorin Grindeanu, European Commissioner for Transport Adina Valean, Presidential Advisor Cosmin Marinescu.
