President Klaus Iohannis will participate, from Tuesday to Thursday, in the meeting of the heads of state and government of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which will take place in Washington, D.C., United States of America.

The Presidential Administration informed in a press release that the 2024 summit is an anniversary one, marking 75 years since the establishment of NATO, the strongest political-military alliance in history, which has proven, in the difficult period since the outbreak of the war against Ukraine included, that the unity, solidarity and resolve of the Allies are its main strategic advantages.

The cited source also points out that this year our country marks two decades since its accession to NATO, membership that brought Romanian citizens the most solid security guarantees in history.

"Romania is a strong and responsible ally, a relevant provider of security and stability in the Black Sea region and beyond. In this context, President Klaus Iohannis will emphasize in Washington that NATO membership is one of the solid foundations of the development of democratic Romania, deeply engaged in the European and Euro-Atlantic security architecture," the press release reads.

During the summit, the leaders will make important decisions on strengthening long-term support for Ukraine, giving it more predictability. At the same time, the allied leaders will agree on the further strengthening and modernization of the collective deterrence and defense posture.

The Summit program will include three meetings at the highest level of the North Atlantic Council, including in formats with Ukraine, the European Union and NATO partners in the Indo-Pacific, as well as an anniversary event. Also, several official documents will be adopted, including the Summit Declaration and a Declaration of the NATO-Ukraine Council.

"The President of Romania will highlight, in the working sessions, the crucial importance of the transatlantic link and collective defense, based on Article 5. In this sense, he will support the Allied decisions regarding the strengthening of NATO's deterrence and defense posture and will request increased attention to the Flank Eastern and Black Seas, a region of strategic importance for Euro-Atlantic security. At the same time, President Klaus Iohannis will emphasize that NATO's position is based on robust and efficient forces, capabilities and command and control arrangements, capable of responding to all threats," informs the Presidential Administration.

According to the cited source, during the meeting, Romania will support the substantial support package for Ukraine. It will show that the Euro-Atlantic integration of Ukraine in NATO is irreversible, in line with the decisions adopted at the NATO Summit in Bucharest in 2008 and in Vilnius in 2023.

The President of Romania will also plead for the continuation of support in favor of NATO's vulnerable partners, especially for the Republic of Moldova, and the increase of their capacity to respond to the growing hybrid threats.
