President Nicusor Dan participates in the meeting of the European Council in Brussels, according to the Presidential Administration.
On Thursday and Friday, EU leaders will hold strategic debates on Ukraine, the next multiannual financial framework, enlargement and the EU's geoeconomic situation. The Middle East, European defence and migration will also be on the agenda of the European Council meeting.
Discussions will focus on the latest developments in Ukraine and issues requiring urgent action by the EU. At the latest meeting of the European Council, held on 23 October, EU leaders committed to addressing Ukraine's urgent financial needs for 2026 and 2027, including with regard to military and defence efforts. They will decide on how to implement this commitment and will also discuss strong and credible security guarantees for Ukraine and diplomatic efforts to achieve a just and lasting peace in Ukraine.
The best ways to strengthen Ukraine's negotiating position, increase pressure on Russia and continue to defend Europe's interests will be assessed, the quoted source points out.
The EU has stood firmly in solidarity with Ukraine and its people since the very beginning of Russia's war. To date, the EU and its member states have provided support to Ukraine worth 187.5 billion euros, of which 66 billion euros in the form of military support, the European Council says.
During the meeting, leaders will review progress on the next multiannual financial framework, the EU's long-term budget, made since the European Commission presented its proposals on 16 July up to the present.
On Wednesday, the head of state also participated in Brussels in the European Union - Western Balkans Summit.
