President Nicusor Dan will present the immediate security consequences of the conflict in Ukraine for Romania and the region to which it belongs before the UN Security Council on Wednesday, State Counselor Vlad Ionescu stated on Tuesday in New York, on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.
The state counselor within the Presidential Administration's Department for Foreign Policy, Strategic Partnerships, and Romanians Abroad explained that President Nicusor Dan's address will take place during Wednesday's UN Security Council debate, titled "Maintenance of Peace and Security in Ukraine." The debate is scheduled to begin at 18:00 (Romania's time) and is being held at the initiative of France, which holds the Security Council presidency this month.
"The meeting is dedicated to a comprehensive assessment of the conflict situation and its consequences for the international multilateral system, stability, and security, including global food security. It is a comprehensive meeting where the President will present, from our perspective, the immediate security consequences for Romania and beyond, as well as for the region we are part of and for the international partners affected by this conflict," the state Counselor explained during a briefing for Romanian journalists. "The multilateral system, as UN Secretary-General António Guterres also noted in his remarks today, is severely affected by this instability and by the resurgence of conflicts. The global architecture is threatened by this Russian aggression. Beyond the immediate consequences, I believe the debate will also address the principles and the functioning of the rules-based global order," he added.
Vlad Ionescu stated that Russia will certainly respond during this debate, given its status as a permanent member of the Security Council, although the level of Moscow's representation remains unknown.
He recalled that a Security Council meeting had recently taken place at Romania's request following drone incidents, attended by Foreign Minister Oana Toiu. This is an issue we are constantly monitoring and raising in all forums, including the UN and, specifically, the Security Council, Ionescu emphasized.
He further noted that the Romanian head of state would certainly highlight the need for this conflict to reach, above all, a "just and lasting resolution."
The United Nations is the most suitable body to mediate, facilitate, and support the resolution of this conflict. First and foremost, we need the conflict to end. Secondly, it is important that it concludes in accordance with the principles of international law, specifically, with respect for Ukraine's territorial integrity and independence. The manner in which this conflict ends will affect the security architecture of all of Europe and, by extension, Romania, said Vlad Ionescu.
He explained that the UN is not an organization that provides defense equipment, unlike NATO or the European Union, but that it is important to use the UN platform to "highlight the political issue and the impact on well-being and economic conditions for Romanian citizens and others; after all, as you know very well, the Black Sea region is vital for global grain and goods exports."
