The members of the Romanian Academy and the Romanian elite strive to improve the lives of future generations, Prince Radu said on Friday during an event at the Elisabeta Palace, part of the program of the May 10 national celebrations, the Romanian Monarchy Day and National Independence Day.
"Queen Margareta and I welcome you today at the Elisabeta Palace for an event (...) which is extremely important for our country's present time. (...) It is not by chance that this important meeting takes place on May 9 (...) given that the contribution of the Romanian Academy for more than 150 years to European culture and the extraordinary efforts that Romanian intellectuals have made to maintain the pace of development of both the spirit and the politics, democracy and freedom of our continent have been remarkable," Prince Radu told the members of the Academia Europaea and the Romanian Academy, at an evening at the Elisabeta Palace dedicated to the two institutions.
He pointed out that the Romanian politics from the middle of the last century was mainly shaped by the Romanian elite and that nowadays they are trying to continue their legacy, which is not an easy task at times.
In his turn, Mircea Dumitru, vice-president of the Romanian Academy, said that the presidents of the Romanian Academy and the Academia Europaea signed on Friday a cooperation agreement between the two institutions, which establishes a hub of the Academia Europaea in Bucharest, whose mission is to conduct scientific, fundamental and applied research, interdisciplinary in nature and with a special focus on social sciences and humanities.
"There are several hubs in Europe. In this part of Europe, in the eastern or central part of Europe, there is a hub in Budapest and starting today we will have one in Romania, which has a regional vocation, not just a national one, in the sense that together with colleagues working in research in these countries of Central and Eastern Europe we aim at a stronger connection of the Romanian research space to the European space. At the same time, a very beautiful and symbolic coincidence makes it possible to set up this new structure on the very day we celebrate Europe, May 9," added Mircea Dumitru.
In his turn, the president of the Academia Europaea, Donald Dingwell, drew attention to the fact that the diaspora is a special part of nationalities, which has an important role to play.
