Prosecutor General discusses with UN rapporteur on independence of prosecutors in Romania

Prosecutor General Augustin Lazar had a working meeting with a UN delegation headed by Diego Garcia-Sayan, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Independence of Judges and Lawyers, during which several topics were discussed, among which the independence of prosecutors, the appointment of high-level prosecutors and legislative changes in the judiciary. 

According to a statement from the Prosecutor General's Office, Augustin Lazar had a working meeting with a delegation made up of Diego Garcia-Sayan, United Nations Special Rapporteur on Independence of Judges and Lawyers, and former Minister of Justice and Foreign Affairs of Peru; Hartmut Rank, Director of the Rule of Law South-East Europe Program; Franziska Rinke, International Rule of Law Program Coordinator, and Christian Steiner, former Director of the Rule of Law Latin America Program. 

At the meeting, Augustin Lazar presented the history and structure of the Romanian Public Prosecution Service, as well as aspects related to the status of prosecutors. 

The main topics addressed in the meeting concerned the independence of prosecutors, the way of appointing high-level prosecutors in the Public Prosecution Service, legal amendments aimed at the judiciary and the criminal codes.
