Prosecutors detain four over migrant smuggling

DIICOT

Prosecutors with the Directorate for Investigating Organised Crime and Terrorism (DIICOT) have detained an Armenian national, an Iraqi national and two Romanians over the establishment of an organised crime ring, repeated illegal border crossing and migrant smuggling.

"The Bucharest Tribunal has ordered the 30-day pre-trial detention of defendants Artak Nahapetyan and Wali Nazem Dashad, while defendants Stefan Penciu and Alexandru-Gabriel Esanu were ordered 60 days under court supervision," DIICOT reported in a press statement on Monday. Investigators claim that November 2015 - February 2016, the defendants established an organised crime ring to commit migrant smuggling, being mules for Arabs of Syrian, Afghan, Iraqi and Palestinian citizenships by illegally crossing into Romania through the green area and smuggling them on to other Western European countries.

On February 28, DIICOT prosecutors and judiciary police officers of the Bucharest Organised Crime Brigade and officers of the Bucharest-Otopeni Border Crossing Surveillance and Control of the General Border Police Inspectorate detected at the border between Romania and Hungary eight migrants - four women, three minors and a man of Syrian and Iraqi citizenships about to be smuggled with the help of the organised crime ring.
