Around 300 employees of the Oltenia Energy Complex protested on Wednesday morning in front of the company's headquarters in the municipality of Targu Jiu, president of the Oltenia Mine Energy Trade Union (SMEO) Gabriel Caldaruse told AGERPRES.
The employees are dissatisfied that approximately 1,500 workers whose employment contracts were concluded for a fixed term will be left without jobs from the beginning of April.
The protesters chanted 'We fight and we win' and are calling for the management's resignation.
'People have come to defend their jobs and the fact that they were misled last year, when they were told that at least until August absolutely nothing would happen, and they are also fed up with the thanks expressed in December and January that the employees of the Oltenia Energy Complex had saved the Romanian energy system. People are tired of promises, tired of thanks and are now effectively protesting to keep their jobs. Overnight, a plan appeared under which 1,476 employees will be dismissed and you can imagine that this creates great dissatisfaction among all employees. They are on fixed-term contracts, but these fixed terms have lasted almost four years, we can no longer speak of people who have worked for three, six or nine months, most of them have been working within the company for more than three and a half years. If the Romanian state has sacrificed this company and says it is taking a great deal of money from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan to close it down, then people believe it would have been normal to ensure social protection for them as well and for a small part of the funds to have gone to them. From 1 April, when the 1,476 fixed-term contracts expire, they have also found a fantastic moment, before the Easter holidays, a moment full of cynicism and lacking in empathy. I believe there are around 300 people protesting at present,' Gabriel Caldaruse said.
According to company representatives, as of 25 February the company had 7,788 employees, of whom 1,945 had individual fixed-term employment contracts and 5,841 had permanent contracts.
