The Social Democratic Party (PSD) called on all political parties in Romania on Tuesday that are represented in the European Parliament to support the proposals put forward by Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu to revise Directive (EU) 2019/633 of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 April 2019 on unfair trading practices in business-to-business relationships in the agricultural and food supply chain.

"The PSD is calling on all political parties in Romania represented in the European Parliament to support the proposals put forward on behalf of the country by Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu to revise the EU Directive 2019/633 on unfair trading practices in the agricultural and food supply chain. All four proposals advanced by Minister Barbu aim to protect local producers from abusive practices by major retailers and to ensure access for domestic agri-food products on the shelves of large retail chains," a release sent to AGERPRES informed.

According to the PSD, the proposals of the Agriculture minister were presented within the public debate initiate by the European Commission for the revision of Directive (EU) 2019/633 and the amendments of the member states will be put to a vote in the European Parliament this autumn.

"In this context, Romania has the opportunity to promote at European level the interests of Romanian producers and the agri-food sector. In such situations, all Romanian political forces represented in the European Parliament must act in unity to support the national interest, regardless of the political affiliation or partisanship of Romanian MEPs," the release mentioned.

The four proposals made by Barbu include limiting private-label products sold by EU retail chains to 20 percent of total sales to ensure fair competition with local producers' brands, applying similar commercial mark-ups for all items within the same product range to guarantee fair competition between imported and domestic products, eliminating the practice of passing rebates and discounts onto local producers, and regulating discounts applied by major retailers at the expense of domestic producers so that they no longer have to sell their products at final prices below production costs.
