PSD's Dragnea about debate in LIBE Committee: ‘A list of standpoints, a condemnation before analyzing evidence’

Deputies' Chamber Speaker Liviu Dragnea said that the extraordinary meeting of the LIBE Committee of the European Parliament, which occasioned an exchange of opinions with First Vice-President of the European Commission Frans Timmermans on the situation in Romania, was not a debate, but "a list of preset standpoints, a condemnation before analyzing the evidence."

„I must admit that I am pretty much disappointed with this attitude, for I have never imagined that an EU member state will be threatened like this, so brutally. I have watched this debate, which in fact wasn't a debate, but it was a list of preset standpoints, already a condemnation before analyzing the evidence, to say so, since I have already experienced that before. We sent written documents, information, evidence to Brussels, but nobody had any reaction, they didn't say clearly what were those amendments in the articles of the justice laws that affect the independence of justice. There is no such thing. On the contrary, we eliminated any political player that could have influenced the appointments of judges and the appointments at the High Court. And this means, in fact, total independence, but maybe this is precisely what they do not want”, Dragnea told Antena 3 private television station on Monday evening.

He also added that, previously, the members of the European Commission and MEPs were informed about the "terrible sideslips of the rule of law and violations of the human rights committed in the name of fighting corruption”, with evidence being presented in support of this.

He also said that "the European institutions should not arbitrate internal political disputes." In respect to the August 10 protests, Dragnea mentioned that there was footage on the Internet of the law-enforcement forces in other European states and that "the gendarmes in these states acted exactly" like the ones in Romania.

The other day, it happened precisely in Brussels. I haven't heard anyone to say there is need of a serious debate or to send to court any of the governments of these states, because of the gendarmes who reacted in an exaggerated manner. The gendarmes in these states have reacted exactly the same as the ones in Romania. So, if the gendarmes in Romania reacted in an exaggerated manner, it means that in the entire European Union the gendarmes react in an exaggerated manner”, added Dragnea.
