PSD (Social Democratic Party) parliamentarian Marius Budai stated on Wednesday that the Romanian authorities must adopt a firm stance regarding Ukraine's new legislation on dual citizenship, going as far as suspending support for the neighbouring country's accession to the European Union.
"As a representative of a country very close to the Romanian community in Ukraine, I strongly condemn the new legislation in the neighbouring country that prohibits dual citizenship for Romanian ethnics! Romania must take a firm position, event to the point of suspending support for Ukraine's accession to the European Union! After all the help we have given to Ukraine, it is outrageous to receive such a response from Kyiv! At least the rule was for all minorities in Ukraine. But when you allow dual citizenship agreements with Poland, the Czech Republic or Germany while excluding Romania, then it is clearly a defiance against our country and a humiliating treatment for the families of ethnic Romanians who died on the Ukrainian front," Budai wrote on Facebook, agerpres reports.
He asked President Nicusor Dan and Foreign Minister Oana Toiu to urgently request a meeting with the Ukrainian authorities to clarify this situation.
"Things cannot remain as they are. Either this was an unintentional omission, in which case the Kyiv authorities must quickly rectify it, or, if the omission was deliberate, Romania must react in order to compel Ukrainian to treat the Romanian minority properly. A state that discriminates against minorities and disregards multicultural values has no place in the European Union! I welcome the PSD's decision to intervene promptly in defending the rights of Romanians in Ukraine," Budai said.
