Social Democratic Party (PSD) Chairman Sorin Grindeanu said on Tuesday that Romania's absence from the highest level of representation at the World Economic Forum in Davos was "a mistake", arguing that the country missed an opportunity to position itself on key international dossiers.
Asked about Romania's relations with the United States in light of President Nicusor Dan's decision not to attend, Grindeanu replied: "A mistake. I won't shy away from saying it. We should have been there. The international agenda is full of issues where Romania must find answers - whether it is Greenland, Mercosur, or the Peace Committee proposed by President Trump. These are matters we cannot run away from. Does it seem to you that we are committed?," the PSD Chairman told Gandul.ro.
He emphasized that foreign policy challenges require Romania's active engagement. "On these topics we cannot afford hesitation. I would have expected the president to go to Davos and take a decision on the proposal sent by the Trump administration. This is not something to ponder endlessly - it is a clear ''Yes'. Romania's security provider today is the United States of America. There are no question marks here. It should be an overt 'Yes'," he concluded.
On Monday evening, Hungarian Democratic Union of Romania (UDMR) leader Kelemen Hunor also criticized the president's absence, saying the head of state "should have considered it worthwhile to be" at Davos.
"You didn't have to stay there from beginning to end. But even a day or two would have mattered. Davos is an extremely important forum where you can meet heads of state, government leaders, and key figures for Romania, Europe and transatlantic relations. It was an important moment to say what Romania thinks about the rapid changes underway. Instead, we act as if the world has stopped - and we stop too," said the UDMR Chairman.
