National leader of the Social Democratic Party (PSD) Chairman Sorin Grindeanu said on Monday that Romania understood a long time ago the risk of any form of xenophobia and has constantly strengthened its legislative framework designed to combat anti-Semitism, extremism and Holocaust denial, but anti-Semitism must not only be combated, but also constantly prevented and coordinated.

"Romania has long understood the risk of any form of xenophobia and has constantly strengthened the legislative framework aimed at combating anti-Semitism, extremism and Holocaust denial. We must be aware, however, that it is not enough just to combat anti-Semitism, but we must prevent it constantly and in a coordinated manner. Combatting anti-Semitic attitudes cannot be achieved in isolation. A constant collaboration between the authorities, Jewish communities and civil society organisations is essential, so that such dangerous reflexes are effectively countered," the PSD leader told a ceremony dedicated to the International Holocaust Remembrance Day and the Remembrance of the Victims of the anti-Jewish legionary pogrom in Bucharest, at the Choral Temple in Bucharest.

He said that manifestations can now be seen, especially as hate speech and disinformation, mainly spread online.

"This type of extremist content quickly goes viral, especially in crisis contexts, fuelling polarisation and lack of tolerance. Anti-Semitism is also evolving and adapting to new social and technological realities. That is why the reaction must be firm and anchored in respect for fundamental human rights. Education, legislation, public policies, but also compassion can contribute greatly to combatting such phenomena. There are ways in which the approach contributes to understanding the danger of anti-Semitism and to raising awareness over the profound impact it has on the lives of people and communities," Grindeanu said.

He added that the moment of homage to the innocent victims of the Holocaust and the anti-Jewish legionary pogrom in Bucharest, in January 1941, is one of recollection, introspection and responsibility for "reaffirming eternal values."
