The National Political Bureau of the National Liberal Party (PNL) unanimously approved on March 2 the nomination of Mihai Dimian, professor and rector at 'Stefan cel Mare' University in Suceava, for the position of minister of Education and Research.

Mihai Dimian (born February 9, 1975) is a university professor and PhD supervisor at 'Stefan cel Mare' University, where he has served as rector since 2024. He holds degrees in mathematics (1997) and physics (2001) from 'Alexandru Ioan Cuza University' in Iasi.

He studied and worked as a research assistant at the University of Versailles (France), earned a PhD in electrical and electronic engineering at the University of Maryland, College Park (USA), and later worked as a researcher at the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Between 2006 and 2016 he was assistant and then associate professor and PhD supervisor at Howard University in Washington, D.C.

Dimian has received several teaching awards, including "Professor of the Year" from the Student Council of Howard University's College of Engineering, Architecture and Computer Science (2008) and the "Professor Bologna" distinction in Romania (2007, 2016).

He has served as president / vice-president of the Commission for Electronics, Telecommunications and Nanotechnologies of the National Council for the Certification of University Titles, Diplomas and Certificates of the Ministry of National Education (2016 - present), and is a member of the Consultative College for Research, Development and Innovation of the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Transformation (2021 - present). He previously sat on the National Council for Scientific Research of the Ministry of Research and Innovation (2017 - 2019) and on the Ministry of National Education's National Council for Statistics and Forecasting in Higher Education (2016 - 2018).

At 'Stefan cel Mare' University, he has led major projects to expand teaching and research infrastructure, attract young researchers and international academics, and develop the university's second campus. He contributed to the creation of over 30 new study programs, helping increase enrollment to 11,500 students in the 2025/2026 academic year, with more than 15% international students.

He is active in organizing national and international science competitions for students, collaborates closely with pre-university schools, and has coordinated volunteer efforts supporting Ukrainian refugees.

Dimian has also promoted the development of the local IT sector and played a key role in Suceava's selection by the European Commission among the 100 smart and climate-neutral cities.

He was awarded the title of Honorary Citizen of Suceava in 2021 and is the author or co-author of several specialized works in his field, including: "Noise-driven phenomena in hysteretic systems" (M. Dimian, P. Andrei, Springer Publisher, New York, U.S.A., 2014), "Stochastic Aspects of Hysteresis" (in Romanian, at Mediamira Publisher, Cluj Napoca, Romania, 2010), "Nonlinear spin dynamics and ultra-fast precessional switching" (ProQuest Information and Learning, Ann Arbor, U.S.A., 2005).
