Romania is below the European average in terms of the funding that the state allocates as support for students, with only 10% of their monthly income, shows the analysis "The minimum basket of the student, in full austerity. How much does it cost to be a student? - over 2,000 lei per month", launched on Monday by the National Alliance of Student Organizations in Romania (ANOSR).

The analysis clarifies the situation of the minimum costs that a student has each month to maintain their studies, the situation of the support offered by the state to them, explaining at the same time the importance of increasing the share of the population with higher education and the support provided throughout the entire educational process, but also the advantages of these measures at the state level.

"Today we bring to the public's attention an analysis that substantiates the expenses of a student as being at least 2,027.99 lei each month, having the following categories of expenses and minimum amounts granted in this regard: food - 1,071.00 lei, accommodation - 454.00 lei, study materials - 68 lei, local transportation - 11.99 lei, clothing and footwear - 234.00 lei, household and personal hygiene products - 189.00 lei. Considering the fact that the minimum amount of the social scholarship is 925 lei, we consider the austerity measures in education, against which we have vehemently positioned ourselves since the first discussions held around the measures, absolutely unjustified," reads the press release from ANOSR.

In this context, ANOSR requests the return to allocating the scholarship fund for the entire calendar year (12 months), the increase in the percentage of the net minimum salary from which the standard cost value for establishing the scholarship fund is calculated from 10% to 17.5%, in order to return to a value of the allocated scholarship fund similar to that of 2024, when the standard cost value represented 10% of the gross minimum wage, the reintroduction of the possibility for students enrolled in fee-paying places to benefit from scholarships from the state budget.

ANOSR also demands an increase in the contribution from higher education institutions' own funds to the scholarship fund, in order to supplement the number of scholarships awarded, especially in order to cover the requests of students eligible for social scholarships, but also a return to the 90% reduction for students on domestic rail transport on all routes.
