Romania can be a strategic gateway to the European single market for Turkish companies in the telecom and IT areas due to attractive investment opportunities and highly qualified Romanian IT specialists, according to Chairman of Romania's National Communications Administration and Regulation Authority (ANCOM) Valeriu Zgonea.

On a recent a visit to Ankara, Turkey, Zgonea met Turkish Deputy Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Omer Fatih Sayan, as well as with Chairman of Turkey's Information and Communication Technology Authority (BTK) Omer Abdullah Karagozoglu.

According to ANCOM, during the meeting with Sayan, opportunities for cooperation between the two countries in electronic communications were discussed, with emphasis on the development of 5G networks, satellite communications and critical infrastructure protection.

Zgonea pointed out that the exchange of expertise and good practices has an important role in addressing the common objectives of the two countries in terms of bridging the digital divide. At the same time, he mentioned that Romania can be a strategic gateway to the European single market for Turkish companies in the telecom and IT areas due to attractive investment opportunities and highly qualified Romanian IT specialists. The meeting was also attended by Stefan Tinca, ambassador of Romania to Turkey, according to Agerpres.

During the meeting with his Turkish counterpart, the chairman of BTK, talks focused on regulatory policies in the area of electronic communications and postal services, collaboration within international organisations (International Telecommunication Union - ITU, Universal Postal Union - UPU, European Conference of Postal and Telecommunications Administrations - CEPT) and the implementation of a memorandum between ANCOM and BTK capitalising on all opportunities for collaboration between the two regulatory authorities.

The partnership established by a memorandum of understanding and bilateral discussions reflects the commitment of both authorities to promote a competitive, secure digital environment in line with international standards.

May 29 - 30, 2025, ANCOM participated in the BTK International Conference in Ankara marking BTK's 25th anniversary. Zgonea delivered remarks to a panel on regulatory perspectives in the postal field.

The National Communications Administration and Regulation Authority (ANCOM) promotes the interests of users of electronic communications services, postal services and digital services during the transition to the Gigabit Society.
