Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Florin Barbu said that Romania currently has a meat self-sufficiency rate of almost 78%, a level he attributed to support programs in the poultry and pig sectors.
During a meeting on Wednesday with the president of the Buzau County Council, Marcel Ciolacu, the minister noted that Buzau County has been a national leader in securing funds for developing the pig sector, with nearly 58 million euros in financing, as well as almost 30 million euros for the poultry sector. "Starting in 2026, Buzau County will produce more than 322,000 piglets in the pig-breeding sector and nearly 10 million chickens in the poultry sector," Barbu said.
He stressed that investments in animal husbandry have enabled Romania to cover a significant share of its domestic consumption while also strengthening its position as a major poultry exporter.
"As a result of all these investments, in 2023, 2024 and also at the end of 2025 - as prove Eurostat data and releases from the National Institute of Statistics - Romania has a self-sufficiency rate of almost 78% for meat," Barbu said. "Moreover, through the investments made over the last three years, with the support and financing of the Romanian Government, we have reached, according to European Commission data, the first place in the poultry sector, with annual exports of almost 290 million chickens. In the egg sector we are also in first place, and in cereals we are leaders thanks to the very large volume of corn exports," Barbu also said.
