Romania's admission to the Chemicals and Biotechnology Committee is an important step in aligning environmental and public health protection with the standards of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Environment Minister Diana Buzoianu explained.

"Romania's admission into the Chemicals and Biotechnology Committee is an important step for environmental and public health protection at the level of OECD standards. It is also Romania's chance to actively contribute to shaping public policies at OECD level. Our country belongs at the decision-making table. We will continue to strengthen institutional capacity and inter-institutional cooperation for a safe and sustainable environment," Diana Buzoianu said on Thursday in a statement to AGERPRES.

The Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forestry (MEWF), in collaboration with the Ministry of the Interior, the National Agency for Environment and Protected Areas, the National Environmental Guard, the National Phytosanitary Authority and the Romanian Customs Authority, ensured the coordination of Romania's evaluation process in the OECD Chemicals and Biotechnology Committee, acting as the national focal point.

According to the release, the evaluation reviewed Romania's legal, institutional and policy framework for chemical and biotechnology management, including prevention and response to chemical accidents and the operation of the Pollutant Release and Transfer Register.

"Romania is getting in line with OECD best standards on chemical management and the responsible use of biotechnologies. Measures taken under the national Action Plan include strengthening institutional capacity and cooperation for environmental risk assessment, conducting systematic inspections by the Environmental Guard, and tightening controls against illegal pesticide trade through enhanced cooperation between the Phytosanitary Authority and the Customs Authority," the statement adds.
