Romania has been granted the organisation of four international wrestling competitions between 2027 and 2030, the World Senior Championships for the first time among them, the president of the Romanian Wrestling Federation, Razvan Pircalabu, told AGERPRES on Thursday.

The four competitions are: the 2027 Under-23 World Championships, the 2028 Under-20 World Championships in 2028, the 2029 Senior European Championships and the 2030 Senior World Senior Championships. The latter will take place in the year in which the Romanian Wrestling Federation celebrates its 100th anniversary.

Romania hosted one single edition of the Senior World Championships before, in 1967, but only the section dedicated to the Greco-Roman style. That year, the World Wrestling Championships were hosted by the Indian city of New Delhi. The World Championships in all three styles, Greco-Roman, freestyle and women's wrestling, have been held in the same place only since 2005.

"We have been chosen by the world forum to organise the 2027 Under-23 World Championships, the 2028 Under-20 World Championships, the 2029 European Senior Championships, and also the 2030 Senior World Championships, the latter for the first time in history, in the precise year when the Romanian Wrestling Federation turns 100 in 2030," said Pircalabu.

The competitions will take place in the new multipurpose indoor arena in Brasov, which will most likely be inaugurated in 2026.

"It will be an ultra-modern hall, with more than 10,000 seats. And, of couse, Brasov is also well positioned as the most important tourist area in Romania. There are so many attractions there for our guests, including the greatest legend in the world, Dracula," the FRL president mentioned.

Since 2011, Romania has hosted several international wrestling competitions in all age categories, the most important being the Senior European Championships organised in 2019 at the Polyvalent Hall in Bucharest.
