Romania is taking part in talks regarding France's nuclear umbrella, but it is too early to draw any conclusions at this stage, official sources said on Tuesday.
According to the cited sources, talks on the issue have been underway for some time and have also taken place at NATO level.
On Monday, President Emmanuel Macron proposed an unprecedented nuclear cooperation for Europe's defense, with Germany as a "key partner", alongside an expansion of France's arsenal, while stressing that France would retain sovereignty over the use of this force.
"Our partners are ready," Macron said, naming eight European countries: the United Kingdom, Germany, Poland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Greece, Sweden and Denmark - all NATO members - that have agreed to participate in his scheme.
"Germany will be a key partner in this effort," the French president underlined. The two countries subsequently announced the creation of a joint "nuclear steering group".
France chose not to join NATO's Nuclear Planning Group, established in 1966, but its nuclear deterrent is considered complementary to that of the Alliance.
