Romania is European Vice-Champion at European Cyber Security Challenge 2017 for the 2nd consecutive year

Romania has become Vice-Champion of Europe in the cyber security competition European Cyber Security Challenge ECSC 2017, held in Spain, for the 2nd consecutive year, according to a Friday release of the Romanian National Computer Security Incident Response Team - CERT-RO. 

Participating in the ECSC 2017 edition were Austria, Switzerland, Germany, Romania, Spain, Italy, UK, Cyprus, Sweden, Norway, the Czech Republic, Greece, Estonia, Liechtenstein and Ireland, each country being represented by a team made of 10 competitors, divided into two age categories, 16-20 and 21-25 years respectively. 

The same as in 2016, Spain won the trophy in the last minute, with Romania coming in second and Italy following on the third sport. This is the 2nd consecutive edition when Romania ranks 2nd in the European cyber security competition, carried out in Malaga, Spain, over October 30-November 3. 

The Romanian team this year was made of Silvia-Elena Pripoae, Cristian-Florin Done, Filip Munteanu, Bogdan Bercean, Neculai Balaban, Catalin Irimie, Otilion Andrei Mamoc, Ionut Dragut, Alexandru Vasile Top and Fineas Silaghi. 

The European Cyber Security Challenge is a initiative of ENISA (European Union Agency for Network and Information Security), aimed at developing the young people's abilities in the cyber security field, as well as at facilitating the contact with the private organizations operating in this field. 

The first stage of selection of Romania's team took place online over June 30 -July 2, 2017. The stage has been organized by the Romanian Intelligence Service, the Romanian National Computer Security Incident Response Team - CERT-RO and the National Association for Computer Systems Security, alongside Bitdefender, Orange, Microsoft, Check Point, eMag, Cisco and Enevo Group. 

The next step was the selection made on-site, which included exercises in the exercises in the fields of web applications security, cyber attack and defence, cryptography, analysis of network traffic, reverse engineering, and also public presentations. 

In order to support the selected team, SRI, CERT-RO ANSSI, Bitdefender, Orange Romania, eMAG and Cisco organized training sessions aimed at increasing the level of technical expertise of Romania's team and cultivate team spirit.
