Romania's team leads the Chinese team 1-0 in World Group II of the Davis Cup, after tennis player Cezar Cretu defeated Yunchaokete Bu 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/ 4), Friday, in Craiova, told Agerpres.
Cretu (no. 292 in ATP) needed more than three hours of play (3 h 07 min) to prevail against Bu (113 ATP), China's first racket in this confrontation.
In the first set, the two went head to head until 3-3, after which the Chinese made the difference and won 6-3 after four consecutive sets. In the second act, Cretu managed a break at 3-3, and this decided the fate of the set, which he won 6-4. In the decider, the Romanian had 5-3, but he was unable to capitalize on the advantage and lost three consecutive sets. Cretu pushed the game into a tiebreak, where he managed to tilt the balance in his favor, winning 7-4.
The Romanian managed 9 aces in this match, compared to the opponent's 6, but also committed 4 double faults (3 for Bu).
The second singles match on Friday will pit Gabi Adrian Boitan (364 in ATP) against Yi Zhou (527 in ATP), a first-ever matchup. Initially, Filip Cristian Jianu (234 ATP) was supposed to play with Zhou.
Saturday will start with the doubles match (13:00), between the Victor Cornea/Bogdan Pavel pair and the Fajing Sun/Rigele Te pair. Cornea ranks 80th in the world in doubles, Pavel is 272nd, Sun 289th, and Te 742nd.
The last two singles matches will be played between Jianu and Bu, respectively between Cretu and Zhou.
The playing surface is hard - Acryflex-T Standard.
Romania and China have never met before in the Davis Cup.
