The national cybersecurity team took 8th place at the European Cyber Security Championship (ECSC) 2024, which took place in Turin, Italy, informs the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC), in a press release sent on Monday to AGERPRES.
As many as 37 teams participated in this year's competition, of which 31 were official and another six were invited outside the competition.
According to the quoted source, during the competition, held between October 8-11, the national teams made up of ten members (five juniors and five seniors) competed for the European trophy by solving tasks related to security in fields such as: web security, mobile security, crypto puzzles, reverse engineering and forensics.
Throughout this process of solving some challenges, the teams collected points for each of their correct solutions.
The Romanian team was formed by: Dragos Albastroiu, Horia Nita, Matei Buzdea, Liviu-Alexandru Bud, Cristian-Iulian Papa, Luchian Marc, Vlad-Stefan Mateciuc, Vlad Ionut Seba, Alexandru Darius Ghica, Denis Cristian Vascuta and the reserves Ionut Epure and Alexandru Robert Antal.
The trophy of the European Cyber Security Championship 2024 went to the German team, followed by Italy and Poland.
At the end of the competition, the ECSC 2024 flag was handed over to Poland, the country that will host next year's edition of the championship.
Last year, at the edition organized in Norway, in Hamar, Team Romania also ranked 8th, out of 34 participating teams.
Romania's best results were in 2019, when it won the competition organized right in Bucharest, as well as two European runner-up titles (in 2016 - in Germany, in Dusseldorf, respectively in 2017 - in Spain, in Malaga).
"In order to represent your country at the European championship, cyber enthusiasts candidates must initially participate in the National Cyber Security Championship - RoCSC or, starting this year, in the Cyber Security Olympics - OSC, competitions organized by the Romanian Information Service (through the National Cyberint Centre), the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC), the National Association for the Security of Computer Systems (ANSSI) and the Ministry of Education, together with the partners Orange Romania and BitSentinel and with significant support from Cisco, Google, certSIGN, Deloitte , UIPath, Amazon Web Services (AWS), PaloAlto Networks, and Phase. Both competitions have two stages, one online and one physical, after which a provisional batch of Team Romania is selected intensive training (bootcamp), the best 10 young people, along with reserves, are selected to represent Romania at the European Championship", the quoted press release informs.
Young people interested in developing professional technical skills can prepare for the National Cyber Security Championship or the Cyber Security Olympiad on the CyberEdu online educational platform, a digital training space where most of the exercises proposed in the previous editions of ROCSC and ECSC can be found, but and other exercises built for international cyber security competitions.
The European Cyber Security Challenge (ECSC) is an initiative of the European Union Agency for Network Internet Security (ENISA) and is part of the Action Plan for the Implementation of the Cyber Security Strategy of the European Union (EU) .
