AGERPRES special correspondent Loredana Ciobanu reports: Research and innovation are the groundwork of the first of the four pillars of the programme of the Romanian Presidency at the Council of the European Union, namely "Convergence Europe", Romanian Minister of Reasearch Nicolae Hurduc on Tuesday said in Brussels after the meeting of the Competitiveness Council (COMPET).

"Within this pillar, our main goal is to promote an extended economic and social development, backed by the new trends in research, based on encouraging the cooperation links. We shall pursue the reduction of innovation gaps and disparities among regions and states of the EU. We are committed to enhancing the European research space, by fostering entrepreneurship within some world-class research infrastructures and some strengthened innovation ecosystems. In this new space, the research entities and the labs, the universities and the industry join forces and share knowledge and skills," Nicolae Hurduc said.

According to him, talks were held within the COMPET in reference to the necessity to advance the regulation on the framework programme for research and innovation for 2021 - 2027 dubbed "Horizon Europe".

"Together with my colleagues, we have talked about the ways we can coordinate our efforts with the European Parliament regarding the strengthening of the research field and the development of innovative solutions, given the synergies with the national programmes and the promise of a better coordination between the financing schemes. Considering today's debates, my team and I will go further and will make every effort to find reasonable solutions to ensure the fact that becomes the tool for high-quality research and innovation, a tool the entire Europe needs," Hurduc highlighted.

The minister added that this programme helps Europe respond to the current concerns of citizens, from health care to security, pollution or climate change, by making it easier to find innovative solutions to all the challenges of society.
