Transport and logistics companies reported nearly 29 billion tonne-kilometers transported by road two years ago, 69 percent more than ten years earlier, which represents the fastest growth rate in the EU and more than three times the EU average, according to Eurostat data quoted by Colliers.

"Romania registered the highest growth in freight volume transported in the European Union. In 2023, transport and logistics companies reported nearly 29 billion tonne-kilometers transported by road, with 69 percent more than ten years ago, which represents the fastest pace in the EU and over three times the community average. The strong growth is also seen in the market for modern industrial rental spaces, which has expanded nearly fivefold in the last ten years and will reach about 8 million square meters by 2025," Colliers consultants said.

However, the lack of highways and modern railways remains a major obstacle to the development of logistics in Romania, Colliers specialists warn, underscoring the need to continue large investments in infrastructure.

"The level of nearly 29 billion tonne-kilometers transported by road is close to that of Hungary, but more than six times smaller than Poland's. In other words, even though Romania recorded the fastest growth in road freight transport in the European Union, the gap with regional economies remains significant. Considering population and the size of the economies, Romania's transported volume should be at least double that of Hungary and half of Poland's. In order to reduce this gap in the next 10-15 years, Romania needs to continue building highways and modernize the railway network, especially in the current context where the domestic economy is under pressure. Such investments would also offset weaknesses reported in other sectors of the economy and prepare us for the next growth cycle," Colliers Partner, Head of Leasing, Office & Industrial Agencies Victor Cosconel explained.

After years of record highway deliveries, the 2025-2026 interval promises a much slower pace of construction and inaugurations, the quoted source shows.

On the other hand, Romania has a high share of transport on waterways, especially on the Danube, where it reaches approximately 20 percent of the total and represents the second highest value in the EU. Colliers points out that this diversification of transport modes is an advantage, however, it cannot compensate for the lack of modern infrastructure in the country's key areas. Colliers consultants underscore that this diversification of transport modes is an asset, but it cannot replace the need for modern infrastructure in the country's key areas.

Colliers is one of the global leaders in real estate consulting and investment management services. The company has annual revenues of nearly 5 billion USD, a team of 24,000 professionals and over 100 billion USD in assets under management.
