The project "Unfinished Conversations on the Weight of Absence", which will represent Romania at the 58th International Art Exhibition - La Biennale di Venezia running May 11 to November 24, was presented on Tuesday at the Romanian Cultural Institute (ICR).

According to the presentation, the exhibition project, to be displayed under the curatorship of Cristian Nae and which has been picked in a competition, is a poetic articulation in a space of dialogue and meeting for three individual artistic projects created by artists who have been active since the '80s: Belu Simion Fainaru, Dan Mihaltianu and Miklos Onucsan.

"I think it's time for Romania to ask how it plans to think of its identity for the future, let's say for the future Centennial. It's a moment when we should also ask ourselves what we are and what we stand for, and not necessarily convey a single image about us, which is why I believe that these installations are a poetic invitation to the public to ponder on this idea of national representation and visibility. Secondly, I think it wants to send a simple message, namely that we are a country where the minorities and the diaspora are being represented, and we believe we can further enjoy our art in a wider sense than that of a particularly located production, as all these artists have each a personal journey. (...) It is a trio that sets us thinking of concepts that are more to the understanding of every one, like their intersecting in a nation capable of embracing everyone. But we wanted to say more than that, namely that politics can be poetic," said Cristian Nae.

The exhibition will span Romania's entire pavilion in Venice, including the vestibule, and the artistic installation will be adjusted to the site specifics.

Cristian Nae said a central work of the exhibition is the one titled "The Monument to Nothingness", featuring small holes where the public is invited to introduce rose petals.
