Romania's tennis player Irina Begu, world number 58, on Thursday defeated wildcard holder Jaqueline Cristian, 19, world number 341, to reach the quarter-finals of the women's singles event at the BRD Bucharest Open tournament.

Seventh-seed Irina Begu, the second Romanian player to made it to the event's quarter-finals after Ana Bogdan, will get 5,900 USD and 60 WTA single points for her performance. Her next opponent is France's Pauline Parmentier, who beat fifth-seeded Elise Mertens of Belgium 3-6 6-4 6-4 on Thursday.
