Romania can become a provider of stability and security for South-Eastern Europe through the expansion of the nuclear programme at Cernavoda, the development of small modular reactors, harnessing offshore wind potential, regional interconnections and network digitalisation, President of the Committee for Economic Policy, Reform and Privatisation in the Chamber of Deputies Costel Dunava said on Tuesday.

"Before us lie major opportunities: the expansion of the nuclear programme at Cernavoda and the development of small modular reactors, harnessing offshore wind potential, regional interconnections and network digitalisation. All these can transform Romania into a provider of stability and security for South-Eastern Europe. At the same time, we know that vulnerabilities are real: outdated infrastructure, dependence on imports in certain areas and the need to better integrate regional systems. In a global context marked by volatility, conflicts in our proximity and a green transition that challenges us to reinvent ourselves, energy has become more than just an economic resource, it is a matter of national security and sovereignty. For this reason, the role of public institutions and Parliament becomes essential, from creating the legislative and regulatory framework that encourages investment, to ensuring a balance between green transition objectives and energy security goals. We have a duty to provide a coherent and predictable framework for the development of the energy sector. Our vision is clear: energy security means independence, economic resilience and well-being for citizens, and to achieve this, we need dialogue, public-private partnerships and responsible policies," Costel Dunava told Aspen Energy Summit 2025.

In his opinion, the future can only be built through a solid partnership between the state and the private sector.

"On behalf of the Committee for Economic Policy, Reform and Privatisation, I want to reaffirm our commitment to contribute, through legislation and institutional dialogue, to building a secure and sustainable energy future for Romania. Our country is ready to be a reliable partner in building a secure, stable, and equitable energy future, in which security is the foundation of progress. The future can only be built through a solid partnership between the state and the private sector, between Romania and its European and transatlantic partners. Next-generation nuclear energy, offshore wind farms in the Black Sea, the digitalisation of networks, all these are pieces of a bigger puzzle: Romania's security and prosperity. Energy security is not just about kilowatts and cubic metres of gas, it means our freedom to decide, the resilience of our economy, and above all, the citizens' confidence in the future. Romania can and must be a pillar of energy stability in the region," Costel Dunava added.

The Aspen Institute Romania organised on Tuesday the sixth edition of the Aspen Energy Summit 2025, where political leaders and investors discussed real solutions to today's and tomorrow's energy challenges.

The summit is organised in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy, National Energy Regulatory Authority (ANRE), the Committee for Economic Policy, Reform and Privatisation of the Chamber of Deputies, and Aspen Institute Central Europe.
