Romania will host this year, in a first, the International Business and Finance Olympiad (IBFO), with high school students invited to register for the 2026 National Selection Program, the pathway to major global competitions in economics, finance and business, a release announces.
High school students passionate about economics, business and finance can register until March 16 for the 2026 National Selection Program, which prepares and selects Romania's teams for the International Economics Olympiad, the World Economics Cup, the International Business Olympiad and the International Business and Finance Olympiad.
The program is run by the Romanian Center for Excellence in Economics (RECE), Romania's official partner for the four competitions. Thanks to RECE's efforts, Romania will host the IBFO for the first time, with delegations from Europe, Asia and Oceania. It will also mark Romania's debut in the competition.
Participation is free and offers students structured training aligned with international standards, mentoring from economists and finance professionals, stronger university applications, and the chance to represent Romania abroad.
If sufficient funding is secured, Romania will also send a delegation to UNSW Sydney, selected from the top 20 finalists of the IEO and WEC combined.
Finalists from all four competitions will receive advanced training from specialists in leading institutions. All exams follow standardized national supervision procedures to ensure fairness and academic integrity. Travel and accommodation for in-person international stages are covered by families or sponsors.
In 2025, Romanian students earned 19 international medals and a distinction in major economics competitions. For 2026, RECE is implementing the Center of Excellence in Economics and the Center of Excellence in Business and Finance, in partnership with the Bucharest Center of Excellence, and under the coordination of the Bucharest School Inspectorate.
More than 50 students completed a seven-month training program this year, guided by nationally recognized teachers. RECE coordinates Romania's participation in top international economics competitions, offering free national training, access to global contests, and mentoring from academics, industry experts and alumni. The program operates with transparent governance, publishes national results openly, and issues an annual impact report.
