Romania-US High Level Defence Group discusses Russian attacks on Danube ports
A delegation of the Romanian Defence Ministry (MApN) led by senior official for defence policy, planning and international affairs Simona Cojocaru on Thursday participated in a round of strategic dialogue within the Romania-US High Level Defence Group, in Washington DC, told Agerpres.
Cojocaru made a detailed presentation of the security situation in the Black Sea region in the aftermath of the recent attacks on Ukraine's Danube ports in close proximity to Romania's borders, according to a press statement from the Ministry of Defence (MApN).
The Romanian official brought into discussion a consistent agenda for the NATO Summit in Washington in 2024, on the 75th anniversary of NATO. "From February 24, 2022, we have proved together what solidarity means and the fact that we cannot be divided, no matter how difficult the challenges we face are," said Cojocaru.
On the occasion of the visit to Washington, the US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin awarded Cojocaru the highest decoration for foreigners of the US Department of Defense, the "Medal for Exceptional Public Service," in recognition of the efforts made in strengthening Romania - USA strategic partnership.
Leading the American delegation at the meeting was U.S. Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs Celeste Wallander.
Discussions at the meeting of this format of bilateral co-operation, which is annual, focused on the developments in the Russian Federation's war of aggression in Ukraine and its consequences at the regional and global level; the position of the American forces in Romania; US support for the modernisation of the Romanian Armed Forces; the security situation in the Indo-Pacific region and Africa; the recent developments in the implementation of the roadmap of defence co-operation, as well as prospects for Romania-US bilateral defence relationship.
