Romania women's national football team will be part of Group C5 of the European qualifiers of the 2027 World Cup, together with the national teams of Cyprus and the Republic of Moldova, the Romanian Football Federation announced on Tuesday, via its official website.

The qualification campaign for the 2027 World Cup will start at the beginning of next year, with the group stage matches to be played between March and June 2026, and the play-offs will take place in the autumn of next year, agerpres reports.

The qualification campaign will have the same format as the Nations League, with the participating countries divided into three value leagues; thus, following the results of the last Nations League campaign, Romania will be part of League C, distributed in the seeded pot.

UEFA has allocated 11 places for the final tournament to be held in Brazil in 2027, and a 12th European team could qualify for the World Cup following an intercontinental play-off.

The 11 qualified teams will be decided as follows: direct qualification - the 4 group winners from League A and qualification following play-off matches.

Route 1: the 2nd and 3rd place teams from the League A groups will play a first play-off round against the 6 group winners and the best 2 second-placed teams from League C;

Route 2: the 4th-placed teams in the League A groups and the group winners in League B will play in the first play-off round against the 2nd and 3rd-placed teams in League B.

Subsequently, the winners of the first play-off round from both routes will be paired up following a draw, and 7 of the winners of the second play-off round will qualify for the World Cup (the hierarchy will be established based on the results of the qualifiers). The eighth play-off winner will play an intercontinental play-off.

The tenth edition of the Women's World Cup will take place for the first time in Brazil, from June 24 to July 25, 2027. In total, 32 national teams will participate in the competition.

The reigning world champions are Spain, who beat England 1-0 in the 2023 final. The record for women's world titles is held by the USA (4), followed by Germany (2), Japan (1), Norway (1) and Spain (1).
