The National Road Investment Company (CNIR) awarded, on Tuesday, a Romanian-Bulgarian consortium the contract for the design and construction of the Bacau - Piatra Neamt Expressway, with the winning bid set at 5.17 billion lei (excluding VAT).

According to a CNIR release, the consortium consists of Danlin XXL (leader) Bucharest, Groma Hold (Bulgaria), Intertranscom Impex SRL, Evropeiski Patisha, and the Road and Highway Construction Enterprise and the contract can be signed if no objections are filed.

The Expressway will connect Piatra Neamt to the Moldavia Motorway (A7), spans 51 kilometres and has a completion timeline of 48 months (12 months for design and 36 months for construction), with a five-year warranty for the works.

"In the award criteria, additional points were allocated to the contractor that hires unemployed individuals from Bacau and Neamt counties, with the feasibility study estimating a total workforce of 1,800 people required throughout the duration of the works," CNIR Director General Gabriel Budescu said, as quoted in the press release.

The Expressway will feature 30 structures (bridges, overpasses, viaducts) with a total length of approximately 16 kilometres. Of these 30 works of art, two structures exceed 1,000 metres, with the longest being the 1,072-metre viaduct at the interchange with the Moldavia Motorway A7, section Bacau - Pascani. Moreover, five road interchanges are planned (a 'trumpet' interchange for the A7 connection at km 0, the Racova interchange for the DN 15 connection, the Podoleni interchange, the Savinesti interchange, and the Piatra Neamt interchange), along with an S3 service area (left-right) and a Maintenance and Coordination Centre (MCC).
