Only 5.21% of companies in Romania with at least 10 employees used Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies in 2025 for business operations, compared with an EU average of 19.95%, Eurostat data published on Thursday show.
The use of AI technologies by companies across the EU increased by 6.5 percentage points in 2025 compared with 2024, when 13.5% of EU companies with at least 10 employees used AI. Data from 2021 (7.7%) and 2023 (8.1%) show that AI adoption is becoming increasingly widespread among EU companies.
In 2025, the highest share of companies using AI technologies was recorded in Denmark (42%), Finland (37.8%) and Sweden (35%). At the opposite end were Romania (5.2%), Poland (8.4%) and Bulgaria (8.5%).
Almost all EU countries saw an increase in the proportion of companies using AI in 2025 compared with 2024. The largest rises were recorded in Denmark (14.5 percentage points), followed by Finland (13.5 percentage points) and Lithuania (12.5 percentage points).
The most common use of AI technology by EU companies was written language analysis (11.8%). This was followed by AI applications for generating images, videos and audio (9.5%), written or spoken language (8.8%) and converting spoken language into machine-readable text (7.2%).
Compared with 2024, the AI application that saw the largest increase in 2025 was written language analysis (up 4.9 percentage points), followed by the generation of written or spoken language (3.4 percentage points).
