Romanian David Popovici has been named best men's swimmer in the 2025 European Aquatics Athlete of the Year Awards after edging out 2024 winner Leon Marchand, European Aquatics and Sports Club Dinamo Bucharest announced on Facebook.
Popovici won two world titles last year in Singapore, in the 100m freestyle and 200m freestyle events.
The Romanian swimmer also secured two golds (100m freestyle, 200m freestyle) and a bronze (50m freestyle), at the European Under-23 Championships in Samorin (Slovakia).
In the 2025 European Aquatics Athlete of the Year Awards, Dutch Marrit Steenbergen has been named the best women's swimmer.
