Secretary of State for Global Bilateral Affairs with Romania's Foreign Ministry (MAE) Monica Gheorghita will head the Romanian delegation to attend the 5th African Union - European Union Summit to be held in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, November 29-30.

MAE says in a press statement that the main theme of the Summit - "Investing in the Youth for a Sustainable Future" - is dedicated to the prospects for Euro-African cooperation, with the leaders of the two continents highlighting the need to create a supportive environment for the younger generations, in the areas of economics, society and culture.

"The focus will be on the need to ensure job creation in line with the aspirations of the younger generations and, at the same time, to define forms of cooperation that enable young people to gain a set of competencies to compete on the labor market," according to MAE.

The debates will cover four major thematic areas: youth training and education; mobility and migration; peace and security, and good governance. The debates will provide the basis for a political declaration of the summit where the main lines of action and priorities will be established.

According to MAE, Gheorghita will reiterate the importance of Romania's relationship with African nations, both from a national and a European perspective.

"In his speech to the summit, the head of the Romanian delegation will mention Romania's role in educating many generations of African young people, underlining the importance our Romania's grants to continuing this form of cooperation, and she will point to Romania's expertise in various areas that are essential to good governance, on which to capitalise by the implementation of projects in cooperation with African partners."

The African Union-EU summit is generally held every three years, alternately in Europe and Africa, being the culmination of the formal Euro-African political dialogue that began in 2000 in Cairo. The overall objective of these summits is to give a new impetus to the bi-regional strategic partnership. Expected to attend are high-level delegations from 82 countries (28 European and 54 African) are expected.
