The Romanian Police launched the guide called "Artificial Intelligence & manipulation of human perception" aimed at educating the population in respect to the mechanisms of spreading deepfake content, as well as how people are kept within information "bubbles", Agerpres reports.

"Artificial intelligence is already part of our daily lives. It helps us search for information, work more easily and communicate faster. At the same time, it can influence what we think, feel and choose, often without us realising it. We live in a digital environment where messages are tailored for each of us, reactions are anticipated, and content is 'filtered' according to the interests that systems detect in our online behaviour," a Romanian Police Inspectorate General (IGPR) release sent to AGERPRES on Tuesday informed.

The guide is available in both Romanian and English and explains, in clear and accessible terms, how false images and voices (deepfakes) can be created, how AI-generated messages or conversations appear, how emotions can be used to influence our decisions or how we end up receiving content "tailored to our tastes" through algorithmic personalisation.

"Today's manipulation is no longer blatant or obvious. It is subtle, personalised and carefully calculated. Many times, it even relies on the traces we leave online: what we search for, what scares us, what attracts us and what makes us happy. That is why the guide not only warns, but also provides simple solutions: digital hygiene rules, suggestions for critical thinking and practical recommendations for parents, students, teachers and any internet user. The goal is for each of us to move from the role of 'passive consumer' to that of an informed and conscious user," the quoted source said.

The guide was drafted by specialists in cyber security, digital education and prevention of computer crime within the Romanian Police (through the Research and Crime Prevention Institute), the National Cyber Security Directorate (DNSC), the National Cyberint Center within the Romanian Intelligence Service (SRI) and the Cloud Security Alliance Romanian Chapter (CSA_RO).

The mentioned institutions underlined that prevention cannot be achieved alone and requires collaboration between authorities, schools, families and the community.

"Only together can we build a safer online environment, recognise manipulation and increase resilience against risks in the digital space. Stay informed, ask questions, check your sources. Online safety starts with each of us," the release added.
