Only 23 per cent of the Internet users in Romania made online purchases in 2017, compared with an average of 68 per cent in the European Union, shows the data released on Monday by the Eurostat.
The champions of online acquisitions are the Internet users from the UK (86 per cent), Sweden (84 per cent), Denmark, Germany, Luxembourg and the Netherlands (each 82 per cent). The lowest levels when it comes to online purchases were recorded in Romania (23 per cent), Bulgaria (27 per cent), Cyprus (39 per cent) and Croatia (42 per cent).
In the past ten years, the percentage of those who bought online increased on all age groups, with the most significant advance recorded in the 16-24 age category (from 44 per cent in 2007 up to 71 per cent in 2017).
Online buyers with ages between 6 and 24 years old accounted for the highest per cent in the Netherlands (90 per cent), Sweden (89 per cent) and the UK (88 per cent) last year. Moreover, the UK also recorded the highest percentage in the 65-74 age category.
