Romanians returned more than 5.2 billion containers last year, with over 350 million containers collected in December alone, RetuRO, the administrator of the Deposit-Return System, reported on Thursday.
Thus, in 2025 the collection rate reached 83%, agerpres reports.
'This result reflects the growing involvement of consumers and the high level of trust in the functioning of the system. More than 350 million containers were collected in December, with a monthly return rate of around 72%. The results for 2025 therefore confirm the system's operational maturity and its widespread adoption,' RetuRO said in a press release.
Over the course of last year, RetuRO handed over approximately 387,000 tonnes of materials to recyclers - PET, aluminium and glass - strengthening collection and recycling flows at national level.
In the two years of operation, more than 8.5 billion beverage containers have been collected through the Deposit-Return System.
'The Deposit-Return System continues to support Romania's transition towards a circular economy, mobilising millions of Romanians to adopt environmentally responsible behaviour,' the release also reads.
RetuRO Deposit-Return System is a company operating on a not for profit basis, meaning that any profit generated by the company from the collection of beverage containers will be reinvested exclusively in the development of the system. The company was created by a consortium of three private shareholders: the Brewers of Romania Association for the Environment (30%), the Soft Drinks Producers Association for Sustainability (30%) and the Retailers Association for the Environment (20%), as well as one public shareholder, the Romanian state, through the central environmental authority, the Ministry of Environment, Waters and Forests (20%).
RetuRO, the administrator of the system, operates with exclusively private funding and is in charge of ensuring transparency regarding the quantities of beverage containers placed on the market and returned by consumers.
