Romania's Chirila advances second to World Championships C1M 1000m final
Romanian rower Catalin Chirila on Thursday was second to progress to the final of the C1M 1000m event at the ICF Canoe Sprint World Championships in Duisburg, Germany, told Agerpres.
Chirila, the reigning world champion in this Olympic event, clocked in at 3:45.235. The competition counts for qualification to the 2024 Olympic Games, with the first six in the final will getting each a berth.
Compatriots Ilie Sprincean and Oleg Nuta advanced to the C2M 1000m final event scheduled for Saturday.
They also progressed to the C2M 500m event.
In the Mixed C2 500m, Romanians Tania Valeria Virijac and Oleksandr Komiahin ranked 6th in heat A securing a place in the semi-finals.
Carmen Morawietz will compete in Final E of the K1W 500m race after finishing 6th in semi-final B. In the K1W 1000m race, Morawietz was eighth in semi-final B, failing to progress.
In the C1W 1000m race, Tania Valeria Virijac came out 8th in the semi-final, failing to progress.
Team Romania is made up of four men and two women: Catalin Chirila in C1M 1000m Olympic and C1M 500m events; Ilie Sprincean and Oleg Nuta in C2M 1000m and C2M 500m Olympic events; Tania Virijac and Oleksandr Komiahin in Mixed C2 500m; Oleksandr Komiahin in C1M 5000m; Tania Virijac in C1W 1000m and 200m Olympic event and Carmen Morawietz in K1W 1000m and 500m Olympic events.
